The Incident That Shocked the Cybersecurity World

A striking incident reveals that France’s iconic Louvre Museum—home to priceless works like the Mona Lisa—was found using “Louvre” as the password for its video surveillance system.

This startling discovery came to light during a 2014 audit conducted by France’s national cybersecurity agency, ANSSI. The report also revealed outdated security software (over 20 years old) and physical security gaps, including easy rooftop access during ongoing construction.

While investigators couldn’t directly link these weaknesses to the high-profile jewelry theft that followed, the findings painted a sobering picture: one of the world’s most renowned institutions had left itself alarmingly exposed due to poor access governance.

The Real Risks Behind the Password “Louvre”

1. Credential Compromise

Using the organization’s own name as a password made the system trivially guessable. A brute force attempt or even a casual insider could gain access within seconds.
Once inside, attackers could:

Disable cameras or alter recordings.

Observe security patterns for future physical intrusions.

Install backdoors or remote monitoring software for continued surveillance.

2. Outdated and Unsupported Software

Legacy security systems without vendor support lack critical patches, leaving known vulnerabilities unaddressed. Attackers often exploit these weaknesses using publicly available kits.

3. Weak Privilege Segregation

If multiple users shared the same administrative credentials, there would be no record of who has used it for what purpose – making forensic investigations nearly impossible after any IT incident.

4. Lack of Centralized Visibility

With no unified audit trail or session monitoring in place, there was no effective way to detect unusual activity such as unauthorized configuration changes or after-hours access.

5. Physical-Digital Convergence Risks

During the renovation period, attackers could exploit physical access to networking hardware or terminals connected to the security system—bridging the gap between physical and cyber compromise.

How This Could Have Been Prevented with ARCON’s PAM Solution

ARCON’s flagship Privileged Access Management (PAM) solution is purpose-built to prevent similar incidents—where unmanaged and unmonitored privileged credentials open the doors to access control risks.

1. Enforced Strong Authentication Policies

ARCON PAM enforces complex password policies and disallows the use of easily guessable passwords such as organizational names or default values. Privileged credentials are automatically rotated, randomized, and vaulted—ensuring no single administrator knows or reuses credentials.

2. Centralized Vaulting and Access Control

Instead of storing credentials in plaintext or within systems, ARCON | PAM’s My Vault releases them only via secure workflows. This ensures:

No static passwords are exposed.

Every session is authenticated and time bound.

Access approvals follow the principle of least privilege.

3. Session Monitoring and Recording

Every privileged session, whether CCTV maintenance or server configuration, is monitored and recorded in real time, creating an immutable audit trail. This would have allowed Louvre’s security heads to detect any suspicious activity instantly.

4. Automatic Deactivation of Dormant Accounts

PAM automatically identifies and disables inactive or orphaned privileged accounts, which often become gateways for insider abuse or external compromise.

5. Integration with Physical Security Systems

ARCON’s PAM can integrate with access control and surveillance platforms to ensure that physical and digital privileges are managed under a single governance umbrella. This reduces the risk of human error during construction or maintenance periods.

Lessons Learned

The Louvre case underscores a simple truth: prestige does not ensure protection. Organizations across all industries are vulnerable when they overlook basic secure access control parameters. Implementing Privileged Access Management is not just about compliance; it is about preserving trust, protecting assets, and ensuring resilience in an age where attackers exploit the smallest oversight.

Conclusion: From Password Misuse to Privilege Security

The Louvre Museum’s “password: Louvre” story is now a textbook example of how simplicity can be the enemy of security. If ARCON’s PAM solution had been deployed, privileged accounts would have been secured, monitored, and managed seamlessly, closing every door that weak credentials and legacy systems leave open.

In the digital age, safeguarding access is safeguarding enterprise digital assets.

Almost a month back, a promising Indian startup experienced what many organizations fear but rarely prepare for — a devastating internal breach. The key application that powered its business was rendered non-functional overnight and controversies galore.

But beneath the headlines was a deeper issue: uncontrolled privileged access and the underestimated risk of insider threats.

What went Wrong: The Blind Spot

Any startup, especially when it is technology-based, thrives on agility, dynamic teams, and rapid iteration. Amid the speed, one aspect is many times overlooked — access governance. Recently, a team member was reportedly terminated who –

Deleted critical backend code and logs

Exploited access privileges which were left unchecked/ unattended post-termination

Eventually, brought IT operations to a standstill

This isn’t an isolated incident. According to industry data, over 60% of data breaches originate from insiders — either maliciously or unintentionally. In environments where trust replaces policy, vulnerabilities multiply. The major reasons for this were:

No Role-Based Access Controls (RBAC): The alleged insider had seamless access to production systems — possibly with no segmentation or oversight.

Delayed Access Revocation: Once fired, the user credentials were still active — a common but dangerous lapse in fast-moving teams.

Lack of Session Monitoring: No clear audit trail of who did what, when, why — making post-incident forensics harder.

Poor Communication and Culture: Layoffs via WhatsApp, dismissals without due process — fueled resentment and chaos internally.

What could have Prevented this?

To keep such catastrophes at bay, growing startups and enterprises must:

Implement Privileged Access Management (PAM): Restricted access to critical IT assets by enforcing just-in-time (JIT) access models.

Automate Access Revocation: Ensure instant deprovisioning of access once an employee exists—especially from IT administration, risk management or development.

Audit Everything: Maintain full visibility over end-user activities through session monitoring and video/ text logs. These are essential for security and accountability.

Zero Trust over Blind Trust: Adopt Zero Trust Security posture — every access must be verified, monitored, and then authorized to access the desired system/ application/ repository.

The Bottom Line

It’s time startups treat insider threats with the seriousness they deserve — and make a robust Privileged Access Management (PAM) solution one of the core essentials of their IT security infrastructure.

In 2024, the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) reported more than 6000 domain name disputes. While a brand’s identity is never confined to just logos and taglines, there is ample digital existence in social media platforms, stakeholders’ information portals and third-party websites.

In today’s digital era, owning a domain name is more than just a convenience — it is essential for brand identity, credibility, and online presence. Unfortunately, this necessity has given rise to a deceptive practice known as cybersquatting. But what exactly is cybersquatting, and how can individuals and businesses protect themselves from it?

About Cybersquatting

The term ‘Cybersquatting’ gained legal traction with the Anti cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA), a U.S. law enacted in 1999, which gives trademark owners the right to sue domain squatters.

Cybersquatting, also known as domain squatting, occurs when someone registers, uses, or sells a domain name with the intent of profiting from someone else’s trademark or brand. The goal is to mislead, extract money, or disrupt the business of the trademark owner.

Some Notable Examples of Cybersquatting

· MikeRoweSoft.com: In 2003, a Canadian teenager named Mike Rowe created this domain as a pun on “Microsoft.” The tech giant sued, and the case was settled with a compromise.

· PETA.org: Originally owned by a party opposing the animal rights organization people for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the site mocked their mission. PETA eventually won the domain after legal battles.

· nissan.com: The domain was owned by a man named Uzi Nissan since 1994 for his computer business. Nissan Motors attempted to take the domain, but Uzi retained it after a prolonged court fight.

Types of Cybersquatting

Cybersquatting comes in several forms, each with its own malicious twist. Let’s explore the most common types:

1. Typo-squatting: This is also known as URL hijacking, which involves registering domain names that are common misspellings of popular websites. For instance, registering amazom.com in hopes that users mistyping “amazon.com” will land there.

2. Identity-based Squatting: This type involves registering domain names that mimic personal names, particularly of celebrities, politicians, or executives, e.g., elonmuskblog.com.

3. Name Jacking: This focuses on registering the names of well-known individuals (often before they become famous) to sell the domain back at a premium.

4. Reverse Cybersquatting: In this case, a trademark holder tries to pressure a legitimate domain owner into surrendering a domain, even if the current owner has the rights or has been using it in good faith.

5. Combo-squatting: This combines a brand name with other words to make it seem legitimate—like paypal-login-secure.com—often used for phishing.

What are the IT security risks of Cybersquatting?

Cybersquatting introduces some serious IT security risks. Investigation has shown that some IT security risks are quite evident because of cybersquatting.

1. Phishing and Credential Theft: Cybersquatters often set up fake websites on domains like legitimate ones (e.g., amaz0n.com instead of amazon.com). These fake sites can collect sensitive information like usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, or corporate credentials through phishing attacks.

2. Malware Distribution: Users tricked into visiting a cybersquatted site may be served malware, ransomware, spyware, or other malicious software. This can lead to system compromises, data breaches, or broader network infections.

3. Business Email Compromise (BEC): If a squatted domain is close to a real corporate domain (e.g., g00gle.com), attackers can send convincing spear-phishing emails that seem legitimate. Employees might unknowingly send sensitive data or authorize payments to attackers.

4. Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) Attacks: Fake domains can be used as part of a MITM attack where an attacker intercepts communications between a user and a legitimate service, sometimes without the user’s knowledge.

5. Brand and Reputation Damage: Customers or partners visiting a malicious domain may lose trust in the legitimate brand, thinking it’s careless about security. This can lead to loss of business and damage control expenses.

6. Traffic Diversion and Data Loss: In some cases, cybersquatted sites simply divert web traffic, which can mean lost leads, sales, and data for the legitimate business. Competitors or criminals may gather market intelligence from these visits.

7. Supply Chain and Vendor Risks: Partners or vendors may also be fooled into interacting with fake domains, expanding the security risk across the organization’s supply chain.

How to Prevent and Combat Cybersquatting

1. Register Key Domain Variations Early: Securing brand name across different TLDs (like .com, .net, .org) and common misspellings.

2. Use Trademark Protection: Registering brand name as a trademark. This provides a strong legal standing in cybersquatting disputes.

3. Monitor Domain Registrations: Using domain monitoring services to keep tabs on new domains that resemble the brand.

4. Act Through UDRP or ACPA: If someone is cybersquatting on your domain, you can file a complaint through: Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP): An ICANN process to resolve disputes out of court. ACPA Lawsuit: A more aggressive legal route, typically used in the U.S.

5. Educate Your Team: Making IT risk management team aware of the risks of cybersquatting and how to identify the risks.

The Bottom Line

Cybersquatting is more than just a digital nuisance—it can damage reputations, mislead consumers, and hurt businesses financially. Whether it is a startup or a global enterprise, proactive domain strategy and legal awareness are your best defenses. In a world where domains are at the digital forefront, protecting it is protecting the brand.

According to the recent ‘State of the UAE Cybersecurity Report 2025’ released by a G42 company from the UAE, more than 223,800 digital assets hosted in the UAE are potentially exposed to cyberattacks. Adding to the woes, half of the critical vulnerabilities remain unaddressed for over a few years.

This report also examines the distinct cybersecurity challenges confronting the UAE, highlighting the rise of AI-driven threats, cybercriminals’ evolving strategies, and the increasing use of AI by state-sponsored actors in advanced persistent threats (APTs).

Some notable incidents of AI-driven cyber-attacks globally include –

Deepfake CEO Fraud (2019) – Criminals used AI-generated audio to impersonate a CEO, tricking an employee into transferring $243,000

BlackMamba (2023) – A proof-of-concept malware that used AI to generate malicious code in real-time, making it nearly undetectable

WormGPT & FraudGPT (2023) – AI tools found on dark web forums designed to generate phishing emails, malware, and fraud scripts

‘Why’ and ‘How’ of AI-driven attacks

As AI advances, cybercriminals also leverage their power to conduct sophisticated cyberattacks. AI-driven attacks pose new challenges for cybersecurity professionals, making traditional security measures increasingly inadequate. Attackers are exploiting AI to increase the effectiveness, automation, and scale of cyber threats.

In this context, it has been observed that AI-driven attacks happen because cybercriminals leverage artificial intelligence to automate, enhance, and scale their attacks. AI can analyze vast amounts of data, identify vulnerabilities, bypass security measures, and generate convincing phishing messages or deepfakes. Attackers use AI to optimize malware, conduct advanced social engineering, and evade detection, making cyber threats more sophisticated and difficult to counter. They employ AI for tasks like:

Phishing (creating highly personalized messages)

Malware development (adapting to security defenses)

Deepfake generation (manipulating audio and video)

Vulnerability exploitation (quickly identifying weak points in systems)

Mitigation of AI-based cyber risks

Numerous brainstorms have been conducted on the mitigation of AI-based cyber threats. While experiments are still being done, some evident strategies can address threats arising from AI-based technologies. E.g.

Launch cybersecurity awareness and education initiatives to train employees on AI-based threats

Run regular cybersecurity audits and compliance checks to detect anomalies

Create an asset inventory to identify network anomalies

Set up a 24/7 Security Operations Centre for monitoring and analysis of every activity

Implement Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)

Establish a robust cyber threat intelligence function

Develop/ follow AI governance frameworks for the safe and ethical use of AI

The Bottom-Line

AI-driven cyberattacks are no longer a futuristic concern — they are here today, evolving rapidly and challenging conventional security defenses. Organizations must embrace AI-driven security strategies, adopt proactive defense measures, and foster a culture of cybersecurity awareness to mitigate risks in this era of cyber warfare.

SEBI imposed monetary penalties on one of the largest trading houses in India for irregularities in providing preferential access

The above examples from history reflect SEBI’s strict enforcement measures to maintain transparency, fairness, and investor protection in the securities market. Non-adherence to SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) regulations by regulated entities (RE) can result in several significant risks. Here are the major ones:

1. Legal Risks: SEBI can impose substantial monetary fines for non-compliance with its regulations, as stipulated in the SEBI Act. Legal proceedings may also be initiated against the entity or its directors, leading to reputational damage and financial loss.

2. Operational Risks: SEBI has the authority to suspend or cancel the registration of intermediaries or market participants. Entities may face restrictions on issuing new products, conducting specific transactions, or operating in certain segments of the market.

3. Financial Risks: SEBI may order the entity to compensate affected investors for any financial losses caused by regulatory violations. Legal fees, penalties, and compliance remediation measures can strain the entity’s financial resources.

4. Regulatory Risks: Persistent non-compliance can lead to the cancellation of licenses or registrations required to operate in the securities market. The entity may face enhanced regulatory monitoring, audits, and inspections in the future.

5. Reputational Risks: Non-compliance can damage the credibility and reputation of the entity among investors, stakeholders, and the public. Negative publicity can impact stock prices and the overall standing of the entity in the financial markets.

6. Investor Risks: Non-compliance often triggers a surge in investor grievances, leading to further regulatory intervention and loss of investor confidence. Investors may withdraw their investments, leading to liquidity issues.

Addressing the Non-compliance Risks

A robust and reputed Identity and Access Management (IAM) solution ensures compliance with SEBI mandates, particularly in data protection, operational transparency, and cybersecurity. ARCON’s range of IAM solutions lays the foundation for complying with the SEBI mandates.

Some IAM features such as Multifactor Authentication (MFA), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), privileged users’ logging activity reports, monitoring secure API integrations, and automated access reviews help complying with SEBI mandates. By implementing a robust IAM framework, banks and trading houses can ensure compliance and reduce the risks of non-compliance penalties, operational disruptions, and reputational damage.

The Bottom-Line

The extension of “Regulatory Forbearance” announced by SEBI is a golden opportunity for regulated entities to audit their IT security do’s/ don’ts and address the non-compliance risks before it is too late.

Cyber criminals now can disrupt your movie hours!

An international subscription-based video streaming service provider has recently faced a nasty and unexpected breach that led to the online release of unreleased episodes of a blockbuster web series. One of the post-production partners was compromised, which is why their intellectual property was compromised. A malicious user disguised as a legitimate subscriber was allegedly involved in the unauthorized leak, which seriously threatened the platform’s information assets and production schedules.

While BFSI, government, healthcare, and telecom industries are always vulnerable to threats, the entertainment industry is not spared today due to the lure of digital content. In the above incident, unauthorized access, lack of end-user monitoring, and inadequate password management are the culprits.

Any post-production studio responsible for creating films, television shows, music videos, and other multimedia content is not spared today due to alluring content, especially among the youth. Any unauthorized access could compromise the time sensitivity of the unreleased shows/ series/ videos. At the same time, there could be a loss of data privacy.

Risk Areas Derived from this Incident

The above incident raises questions about the victim organization’s IT security initiatives.

Did the suspected user have privileged rights to access the streaming content?

Wasn’t there any Privileged Access Management deployed? Or any stringent access control mechanism?

Wasn’t the streaming data encrypted?

To analyze a bit deeper, a reputed and robust Privileged Access Management (PAM) could have prevented the disaster, monetary loss and the subsequent reputational backlash.

Any unauthorized access or “authorized” access with malicious intent could jeopardize the objectives of data security, privacy, and integrity. Unauthorized access could be catastrophic, especially in the entertainment industry, where the time sensitivity of the data is extremely important.

At the same time, the absence of any role-based or policy-based access control mechanisms encourages random access to critical content and results in the misuse of sensitive data.

Lastly, unencrypted data can lead to data breaches, identity theft, privacy violations, and operational disruptions. Sometimes, organizations are forced to face legal consequences as well.

ARCON | Privileged Access Management (PAM) can address all the above requirements under one roof. Had there been a PAM solution in the organization, as mentioned above, there could have been MFA (Multi-factor Authentication) to prevent unauthorized access, RBAC (Role-based Access Control) & PBAC (Policy-based Access Control) to ensure the right access to the right content to the right user and My Vault to securely store every sensitive data using advanced encryptions algorithms. Privileged users with elevated access rights can upload files encrypted and stored in a centralized/ quarantined repository.

The Bottom-Line

Today, cybercriminals are the least bothered to pay any heed to organizations and their industries. Organizations responsible for releasing streaming content for entertainment purposes are also not spared. A robust and reliable PAM solution can elevate the organizations’ IT security standards and help them broadly protect their ‘continuously evolving’ content.

What, Where & Why?

‘Just’ a password breach can cost you $4.5 million!

Yes, it is shocking, obnoxious, yet true! Recently, a reputed life science and biotechnology company based out of the United States of America faced a penalty of $4.5 million to settle regulatory charges that lax mandatory security protocols.

A year ago, a cyber incident in the organization compromised the Social Security numbers, health histories, and other information of about 2.4 million patients.

Post investigation, it was revealed that –

The cybercriminals accessed the organization’s network using a couple of log-in credentials shared by five employees.

One credential among them was not changed for almost a decade.

There has been no definite password management policy and no signs of automating password generation/ rotation in the last few years.

The victim organization was not complying with the necessary and relevant regulatory standards.

What is the Risk?

A healthcare (precisely biotech) organization present in six different countries worldwide has a sea of confidential, business, and research data. Naturally, they had to manage a vast network user base comprising IT administrators, privileged users, general users, and ad hoc privileged users who continuously interact with and access patients’ data, medical history, and lab research reports. Hence, the risk of data breaches is also higher.

Passwords are the first gateways to critical IT infrastructure; if they are vulnerable to threats, they can lead to catastrophes. Poor password management can lead to significant risks –

Data Breaches/ Data Loss

Identity Thefts

Disruption of Services

Financial Loss (ransomware/ non-compliance penalties)

Phishing Attacks

Reputational Damage

Compromise Confidentiality

The Economic Times say that cybercrime is set to cost the global economy more than $3 million in the coming days, and some 80% of these attacks are related to password abuse or password breach. Passwords are the keys to access enterprise business assets and if it is compromised, the confidentiality of the data assets turns to be at stake. The risk multiples in the case of privileged passwords and even the smallest of a single password vulnerability can lead to catastrophic consequences.

What is the lesson learnt and what are the recommendations?

In the above incident, inadequate/ poor password management led to disastrous consequences. Enterprise IT environments must follow standard password management practices.

ARCON’s password vault enables organizations to generate complex, randomized passwords for privileged accounts that cannot be easily interpreted. It also allows organizations to enforce password policies, such as password expiration and the extent of complexity and rules, to ensure that passwords are updated regularly and meet the organization’s security standards.

This robust and essential feature of ARCON | PAM (Privileged Access Management) eliminates the need for end users to remember and share passwords and lowers the risk of password misuse. It also provides an audit trail of all privileged account password access, including who accessed the password, when, and for what purpose.

Here are some typical and everyday tactics to ensure password security:

Always avoid using default admin passwords

Passwords must never be maintained and shared in excel sheets

Implement a mechanism to randomize and rotate passwords at frequent intervals

All passwords should be vaulted and encrypted

Well-defined password management policy must be mandatory

The Bottom-Line

There is no alternative to secure password management. Inadequate/ Irrelevant password protection measures lead enterprises to face the risk of permanent loss of its integrity.
